Government Sanctioned Killings Around the World – Capital Punishment

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT BY THE NUMBERS

THE KING CAN DO NO WRONG…at least that is what they want us to believe in. I for some reason was under the impression that Thomas Hobbes theory titled “Divine Rights of Kings” was ancient history. However, this is not the first time I have been proven wrong.

Well here is a synopsis of Amnesty International’s report titled “Death Sentences and Executions 2011”.

• Total of at least twenty (20) countries executed people.
• The youngest country in the world South Sudan too carried out capital punishment.
• In the year 2011 at least 676 executions were carried out worldwide. In the year 2010 at least 527 executions were carried out worldwide.
• The 2011 figure jumped significantly due to “increase in judicial killings in Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia”.

(A)   Capital Punishment in USA:

• Amnesty Int’l is at odds with Washington D.C. for being “in its dubiously bad place on this fundamental human rights issue”.
• The USA is the only country in the western hemisphere or the among the G8 countries (USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Russia & Japan) to kill its prisoners.
• USA has the 5th highest number of executions in the world.
• Number #1 spot goes to China
• Number #2 spot goes to Iran
• Number #3 spot goes to Saudi Arabia
• Number #4 spot goes to Iraq

1. The State of Texas, located in southern United States, carried out the largest number of executions in 2010.
2. Texas executed thirteen (13) human beings in 2010
3. If Texas was a country it would take the 7th spot in the world. Ranking between North Korea and Somalia.

(B)   Capital Punishment in Mainland* China: 

*The death penalty is not practiced in Hong Kong or Macau, which are separate jurisdictions under the “one country, two systems” principle.

1.  The minimum age one can be sentenced to death is eighteen (18).
2. Fifty-five (55) crimes carry the death penalty, ranging from murder, treason, drug trafficking, aggravated murder, armed rebellion to bribery and smuggling.
3. Crimes such as theft of cultural relics, killing of Pandas, no longer carries the death penalty
4. Thirteen (13) other crimes, including VAT fraud, smuggling relics and credit fraud, were only recently removed from the list of capital offences.
5.  Many human rights monitors, NGOs & watchdog groups strongly believe that actual numbers are astronomically higher than the official records on executions.
6. According to Dui Hua Foundation, China executed some 5,000 people in the year 2009. This number is higher than all the executions carried out around the globe.  The exact figures may never be known, since the Chinese government regards them as a “state secret”.

Organ Transplants & Capital Punishment in China:  

• In 2009 Beijing publicly admitted that two-thirds of all organs used in transplants in China are taken from executed prisoner.
• For decades a underground economy flourished at the expense of the dead and young conscripts in the armed forces.
• Under the prevailing law, organs can only be taken from condemned prisoners if they give written consent, however the law is rarely followed.
• Today, the Red Cross Society of China educates the public and encourage them to offer their organs for donation. The Chinese Red Cross has created a vast database of potential donors & financial assistance is given to under privilege families of such volunteers.

Author’s thoughts: When a government puts an individual(s) to death, it is nothing more than premeditated murder. Here, the state is the (bad) actor who commits a crime which wrongfully causes the death of another human being. Wrongfully because, life belongs to the liver [no pun intended], the intended recipient and NOT to Kings, Queens, nobility or governments. The human institutions do not have a right to take life away from the “condemned” in the name of justice or retribution.

The state actor rationally considers the timing, method and means of the execution so as to bring certainty that death occurs and the “condemned” will die when such methods or means of execution are applied on his humanly body.

In my humble opinion violence begets violence. Life is too precious and government’s have no right to take it away. Two wrongs do not make a right. The alternative is life imprisonment without possibility of parole. Live & Let Live. ~ Please, spread the word. Thanks.

These are open societies, run by their democratically elected governments, should they NOT be free to respect and follow their respective Constitutional laws?

5.  Why should democracies around the world follow or give in to the demands of those who wish to establish Sharia law?

Many of us who have experienced religious / communal hatred & violence first hand will tell you that a society built on religious doctrines is one of the most dangerous society / country in the world. Perhaps you may disagree?

I for sure can say this with a clean heart & rational mind, any individual who espouses, preaches, sympathizes, supports or follows this madness, whether this “madness” is based on the teachings of Prophets Mohammed, Ali, Jesus Christ, Shiva, Vishnu, Zarathushtra or any other is just a BARBARIAN. Dear Friends & critics

As I investigate and report on India’s criminals and enemies of the state – politicians, members of law enforcement, gurus, charlatans, spiritual leaders, charitable organisations, industrialist, businessmen/women, I feel sick to my stomach.

My sickness stems from the sheer immorality, illegality, connivance, cruelty, and the impunity they enjoyed for decades and continue to do so today.

I have taken the liberty to share some observations made in the GFI report – The Drivers and Dynamics of Illicit Financial Flows from India: 1948-2008: A new report from Global Financial Integrity, November 2010.

• The report estimates that tax evasion, crime, and corruption have removed gross illicit assets from India worth US $462 billion (adjusted value) from 1948-2008.

• These illicit financial flows were generally the product of: tax evasion, corruption, bribery and kickbacks, and criminal activities.

•  The report also finds that the faster rates of economic growth since economic reform started in 1991 led to a deterioration of income distribution which led to more illicit flows from the country.

• India’s poor state of governance is reflected in a growing underground economy which in turn has fueled more transfers of illicit capital from India. This analysis is cast in terms of a pre- and a post-reform period spanning a total of 61 years since independence.

• “This report puts into stark terms the financial cost of tax evasion, corruption, and other illicit financial practices in India,” said Global Financial Integrity director Raymond Baker. “It also shows that these illicit outflows contribute to stagnating levels of poverty and an ever widening gap between India’s rich and poor.”

• India’s aggregate illicit flows are more than twice the current external debt of US $230 billion.

• Based on the last five years of the study, 2004-2008, India lost assets at a rate of US $19 billion per year.

• Total capital flight out of India represents approximately 16.6 percent of India’s GDP as of year-end 2008. In present value terms, India lost an equivalent of about 36 percent of its 2008 GDP which represents a staggering loss of capital.

• 68% (percent) of India’s aggregate illicit capital loss occurred after India’s economic reforms in 1991. 

• From 1948 through 2008 the Indian private sector shifted away from deposits into developed country banks and moved more of its money into offshore financial centers (OFCs). The share of OFC deposits increased from 36.4 percent in 1995 to 54.2 percent in 2009.

• India’s underground economy is closely tied to illicit financial outflows.

• The total present value of India’s illicit assets held abroad ($462 billion) accounts for approximately 72 percent of India’s underground economy. This means that almost three-quarters of the illicit assets comprising India’s underground economy—which has been estimated to account for 50 percent of India’s GDP (approximately $640 billion at the end of 2008)—ends up outside of the country.

• The finding that only 27.8 percent of India’s illicit assets are held domestically support arguments that the desire to amass wealth illegally without attracting government attention is one of the primary motivations behind the cross-border transfer of illicit capital.

• In the post-reform period of 1991-2008, deregulation and trade liberalization accelerated the outflow of illicit money from the Indian economy. Opportunities for trade mispricing grew and expansion of the global shadow financial system—particularly island tax havens—accommodated the increased outflow of India’s illicit capital flight.

Author’s thoughts: As long as we do NOT unite under the tri-colored flag without reservations, or feelings of bias or prejudice towards our fellow citizens, the government will NEVER be held accountable to its people. Majority of our politicians are criminals, first step is to change the electoral process. Set up high standards for those who run for public office and keep them in check through checks and balances, internal and external.

Keep our judiciary and it’s officers free from political, societal or legislative influence or pressure. I urge one and all to UNITE and fightback. One great fighting tool is Public Interest Litigation (PIL). Stay United, Stay Involved, Stay Vigilant, & always be brave to fight the enemies of the state. ~ Jai Hind.
